How about trying to cook more meals at home in your kitchen with food from your local farms rather than going out to eat or buying from the supermarket?
Here are 6 tips on how to prepare meals at home and why it is important.
Improves Family Time
Cooking and eating at home with the family is a great and important way to bond with the family. Eating dinner together can be a great time to talk about your day and what you've accomplished.
Studies have shown that eating together is much healthier for children and the family. It can help children do better in school and will help them improve healthy eating habits.
Getting your child to read off a recipe for you will not only be fun but also help them to keep their interest in healthy foods.
It can save money
Eating homemade food is not only healthier but also cheaper than eating at a restaurant or buying processed food at the supermarket.
If you pay for a meal at the restaurant you're not only paying for the food but also the costs of running that business. For example: electricity, water, staff, etc.
A great way to start is by having a weekly meal plan and to stick with it. In a previous blog I wrote about the importance of eating breakfast. In this blog you'll find a link to a weekly meal planning guide. Or get the pdf right now by clicking this link.
It can save time
Driving to the supermarket and grabbing something to eat or ordering take-outs from the closest restaurant may seem like a time saver. But in reality, there are a lot of recipes that can be cooked at home in less than 30 minutes. And, if you cook a little extra when you have more time you can put the leftovers in the fridge or freezer and heat them up at a later time for a quick meal.
Better ingredients
Many foods at the supermarket or restaurant are commercially processed which include a high amount of fat, salt, and sugar.
By preparing your own meal at home you can control the ingredients and how much of each you are putting into your food.
Avoid allergic reactions
Preparing your own foods can also be beneficial if you or a family member is allergic to certain food.
By preparing your own food you are in control of what ingredients you use. This may help to reduce allergic reactions.
Control over eating
If you order a meal at a restaurant or a fast food joint you won't be able to get the exact amount that you'll be able to eat at once and if you get more than you can eat chances are you'll overeat. It happens for me every time I eat out ):
By preparing your own you can eliminate this factor and cook according to what you might be able to eat in one meal plus you'll likely be eating healthier.
