The pic above is from our hogs at Hidden Spring Acres.

Special heritage breed of hogs raised ethically and humanely vs in confined spaces.

Red Wattle Hogs are known for their hardiness, foraging activity, and rapid growth rate. Sows are excellent Mothers, who have about 7 to 12 piglets per litter and provide a great source of milk for the entire litter to grow up healthy and strong (and quick).

As the name indicates, the Red Wattle pig is large and has a wattle attached to each side of the neck underneath the chin which to our knowledge has no purpose.

They are known to be very smart, sweet and about any part of the meat can be turned to bacon because of it's great tenderness and flavor. They are considered a premium quality pork!

Why do hogs like the mud?

Hogs have very little hair on their skin, similar to humans. This causes them to get sunburnt if they don’t go in the shade or cool off in the mud. This tells me that hogs use shade or mud as a natural sunscreen, instead of suntan lotion like we humans tend to use on our bodies.

At Hidden Spring Acres the hogs can get all the shade, mud, or sunshine that they wish, along with foraging for grass, roots, weeds or whatever they can find on the large open pastures that they roam on. They also get a choice of non-gmo, all-natural pellet grain to help them stay fat and healthy. They are never forced to stay in the barn until it is time to take them to the processor.

Aside from the pasture and grain they also get excess table scraps, milk, and in the winter they'll be fed grass hay (balage) along with minerals to keep their diet properly balanced.

Red Wattle pork is known as one of the best Heritage Pork in America.

It is known for its flavorful, earthy, minerally, and bold taste, along with great marbling that is described to as similar to beef.  The meat from these humanely raised hogs is lean, tender and absolutely delicious.

However, Red Wattle meat is known to be considerably inconsistent in flavor. It can taste earthy, vegetal, and even herbaceous. Its expressive porky flavor is concentrated and bold.

All the above is the reason we at Hidden Camp choose the Red Wattle breed to stock the freezer with wonderful and flavorful cuts of pork.

At Hidden Camp Farm we choose to provide you with the best quality pork that you can eat with confidence and that you know was raised with much tender loving care.
